Vocabulary explosion continues....

So, the daughter is almost 19 months old, and the most significant developments I see in the last 2-3 months are language, cognitive and emotional growth. (See update at 16-month here)

I continue to be amazed at HOW MUCH she picks up from us by simple observation.

On the vocabulary front, she has been saying complex words like:
Octagon - she knows the shape and can correctly place it in her shapes puzzle
Pentagon - same as above
Horseshoe
Bumblebee
Awesome
Excuse Me
Hawaii

and much much more. I cannot keep track of how many words she speaks - in Gujarati, Hindi (her favorites are kabhi kabhi and dhongi :P), and English. She is a parrot - she will instantly repeat everything!

Every single morning, after I brush her teeth and wash her face, she tells me she wants "scheme" - referring to "cream". She says it oh-so-oober-cutely.....I absolutely enjoy it. I long to hear her say "scheme" every morning :)!

She responds back in sentences like: "you cranky {canky} mumma" (yes, she said that to me once), "Pappa, this is blue ball", "mumma, here you go", etc. This is a significant development as well...that she can relate to the words/objects she knows and form meaningful sentences out of it.

Her gross motor skills and some fine motor skills are getting better - she can now hold a pen/brush and paint, she holds her wooden peg puzzles pieces, rotates them and places them in the right slots. She can hold a spoon and eat, but she will create such a huge mess that I don't let her do it as often as she should :(. She can stack blocks and build towers.

Cognitively, she is doing great as well. She can recognize people by looking at pictures, she remembers places (like mygym) and associates our drive to a familiar area to going to meme {mygym}, she knows all the alphabets (saying as well as recognizing the letters), she picks up the phone...says hello and starts talking (the other day, I spoke to her from work and she told me "hello mumma, love u, miss u" and I went awwwwwwwwwww), she dances to rhymes and hindi songs and even completes the song when we sing it (for example: hubby sings..."say shava" and then she will say "shava shava oh yeah" :)), she knows colors/shapes/few numbers (but no counting yet), etc

Her fascination remains with books - we still read about 15 different books each day. Library is our best friend these days. We get all kinds of books for her - flap books, fruit/veggie picture books, simple story books, etc. She loves the one where Dora is looking for the person who made the huge footprints in the sand. She also loves the Curious George Pizza party book. Ofcourse, the older ones - Hugless Douglas, Thomas, etc are also still her favorites.

Socially and emotionally, she understands SO much. We have to be extremely watchful of our behavior in front of her. I cannot simply tap or pinch the hubby (jokingly, ofcourse)....she takes offense to it. Vice versa is also true. If we avoid talking to her or playing with her, she gets pissed off. On one such instance last week, I was talking to hubby about something and she felt avoided. She came and bit me so hard....it left a bad bruise on my arm. I was stern and told her that this behavior was not acceptable...however, I have no idea how much got into her head.

One other awesome thing is - she now picks up stuff from the floor, and instead of putting it in her mouth, she takes it to the trash can. Ofcourse, we are very watchful and never leave her unattended, but still, this is very good progress from the stage where everything went into the mouth - sometimes we knew what went in, many times we didn't :).

I also found some simple activities for her to do from things in the house. One suggestion from my mom's group was to use the empty wipes container (plastic) and have her fill it with stuff inside (we used plastic rings which can be chained together). I showed her to do it, and she plays with it for few minutes everyday. She chains the rings, puts them in, removes them....has not learnt how to unchain them yet but we will get there.

Another thing I did is - took an empty oatmeal cylinder (made of cardboard) and showed her how to put blocks inside, shake and make noise, roll it on the floor, then open it and remove the blocks, and then do the whole process again. The first day...she spent more than 45 mins playing with that thing. Even now, she enjoys playing with it.

We explored making art on card stock using foam pieces and some glue at the museum. We also did painting on glass. She still loves her Aquadoodle and paints on it with her water pens or brush every single day. However, I need to get her to explore different textures - play dough, sand, etc. Since its been chilly outside and she has either had a cold or fever every weekend, we have been cautious about doing things outdoors.

Her streak of saying NO in gazillion different ways continues. I feel I should have a counter to record how many times she says NO during the day! Part of this is because she is becoming more and more independent, and mature. We understand that....and I'm glad we are both extremely patient when it comes to interacting with her.

I feel time should go a weeeeee-bit-slow though :).....my munchkin is growing up faster than I can blink!

And I love this pretty face - a LOT!!!!!

Women's Tennis

While waiting at the lab this morning for a blood draw, I was browsing through the Sports Illustrated magazine. It had an analysis of the Australian Open Finals, both men's and women's. Of all the sports that I play or watch, I love tennis the most - both playing, as well as watching.

I remember waking up in the middle of the night with my dad when I was 6 years old to watch Grand Slam matches. Because of early morning school, I usually only got to watch the quarters, semis and finals, and those times were fun. Steffi Graf, Martina (Navratilova and Hingis), Sabatini, Chris Evert, Seles - that era was something else. Of all the players, I admire and adore Steffi Graf the most. I loved watching her games.

The men's game can be rated as the best of all times right now. There is so much versatility and competitiveness - as we can see from the Fab Four players (Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Murray) who consistently wow us with their performances at each event. Sadly, there is no such wow factor to be found on the women's side.

Did you see the finals of the Australian Open? Sharapova rightly deserved the drubbing. She was just standing on the baseline and hitting the ball with as much power as she could manage. She was using very little of her brain to come up with some volleys, drop shots, coming to the net or varying her game to beat her opponent. Both the finalists were grunting so loud on the court - it was almost unbearable for me to watch, honestly! A few years ago, I thought Sharapova was going to be another Steffi....but I was wrong!

If you look at the last 4 Grand Slam events played, Petra Kvitova won Wimbledon (1st Grand Slam win), Li Na won the French Open (1st Grand Slam win), Samantha Stosur won the US open (1st Grand Slam win), and Victoria Azarenka just won the 2012 Australian Open (1st Grand Slam win). Caroline Wozniacki held the #1 ATP ranking for many weeks during 2011, and she is yet to win a major.

It's okay for different players to win Grand Slam events, and each one deserves their win. However, they shine in one major, and then go out in one of the early rounds at the next major. Or succumb to injuries. Or, like in the case of Justine Henin, personal life takes over. I wonder why they don't take their game seriously and improve upon their performance at each event. We don't see this on the men's side, only in the women's. And I hope the situation improves - soon enough.

I'm the only one among my group of friends (who all love tennis) that watches the women's games. Everyone else finds them boring, and to an extent, I agree. However, I support the players, and the game, and am always hopeful of a good match.

One other thing to observe is the lack of top players from the US. Serena and Venus Williams are almost towards the end of their career (or so I hope), and Andy Roddick seems to be on the downward spiral as well. There are so many academies here and so many leagues being played regularly - I'm wondering why there is a dearth of top US players in the ATP rankings.

Of all the top players on circuit right now, I really think Kim Clijsters is the most promising player. She made a wonderful comeback as a MOM in 2009 (I admire her for that), won the US Open back to back in 2009/2010, and also won the 2011 Australian Open. I like her quick paced game, and she does not fear from coming to the net often. I also love her personality - she is so charming to watch!

As the article I read today stated - if the men's game is an oligarchy, the women's game has been a study in anarchy :). Let's see what the future holds!

{this moment} Presidents Day Staycation

"A Friday ritual. A single photo - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember" - SouleMama

We could not travel as planned this long weekend (the daughter was sick - again), and I was feeling a little bummed about it on Saturday. Every time I feel like this, the universe conspires to make it better for me.

On Saturday, I completed all the weekend errands. We took the daughter out for a bit but came back home soon.

On Sunday morning, I got a phone call from a good friend who was in town with her adorable 4-month old who I wanted to be introduced to, and we got together for lunch with another common friend of ours and her husband/daughter.

I also found time to indulge in some retail therapy. I bought a nice perfume for myself, Armani Code, making use of the gift card that hubby gave me on Valentines Day. I got a couple outfits for the daughter, as well as some awesome Brooks Brothers PJ's for the husband. Yep- he gets me flowers, candy and perfume - and I get him PJ's :D! Next gift for him is summer shorts :P!

We took the daughter to the Sacramento Children's Museum for her second visit on Presidents Day. As usual, she had a blast out there. Her favorite part was painting and the waterways section, where she got drenched. We forgot to take an extra pair of clothes so I just took off her white undershirt which was soaking wet and left the other clothes on (did not have an alternate choice anyway ;)).

I also had a massage appt.on Monday afternoon, which I had booked a while ago and forgotten, but I got reminded of it by the massage therapist on Sunday evening. Oh Boy, the massage was heavenly...I could get one every day! It totally relaxed me and put me in a very good mood before the beginning of a very busy work week.

Hubby and I also managed to watch a movie at home during the daughter's naptime.

Overall, our staycation turned out to be pretty good. We spent a lovely time together as a family, and also got to socialize with friends!

We have family coming into town this weekend, so it promises to be a fun one as well :)!

These days...I love....

-- A friend who delivers lunch at my desk (and pays for it too) when I have back-to-back meetings without a lunch break.

-- A friend who IM's me to have lunch with her - just when I'm about to start having it at my desk, coz the lunch hour has gone by and I don't have any company.

-- When my daughter senses that I am tired, and gives me a huggie, kissie and does vahali-vahali (gujarati expression of TLC) without even asking for it.

-- My neighbors, who are simply awesome. They help us so much, with everything.

-- My daughter's caregiver, who now showers her with gifts as well, on top of hugs, kisses, I love you my jaan, and much more.

-- My dearest husband, who brings me a glass of warm milk along with my vitamins in bed at night. {I usually fall asleep while putting the daughter to bed - sometimes he does too, but he wakes up to finish the chores and gets me my milk/vitamins}. I know I'm lucky, and blessed!

-- Scoring a cute deal on something I needed to buy soon. That too from the Intel Marketplace (trusted), from a grandma who bought it with so much love for her grand-daughter but it went unused.

-- Gorgeous Folsom winter sunsets. They are much better than the summer ones. Especially if there are clouds around. I saw one a couple weeks ago....it was breathtaking. I did not take pictures, I just stood there on the edge of the hill overlooking the prairie and the city, and soaked it in.

-- Love, Love, Love listening to Adele. {I am listening "Set Fire to the Rain" right now}.

-- The excitement of planting lots of tulip bulbs and spring flowers this weekend. The daughter will love to see them blooming. We are planting blueberries too, coz she can't seem to get enough of them.

-- The anticipation of a possible weekend getaway. {This weekend is a long weekend in the US - President's Day}.

-- Wondering how 2012 will unfold :) :) :) :)!!!!

Music

Grammys tonite - Whitney's death - a Prarthana Sabha with wonderful bhajans last night - music is definitely on my mind this Sunday morning.

Just like pretty much everything else in my life, listening to music has also taken a backseat. It's not that my life is boring....but I just choose to enjoy the daughter to the fullest and when I'm not with her, I spend that time either working or running the household and sleeping - I love to sleep!

But last week was different. I found pockets of time during the day (at work, at home in the evening, events) where I got a chance to listen to some really good music.

My interest in music is varied - from little bit of classical, to gujarati songs, to Kishore Kumar and other classic oldies in Bollywood, to country-pop-RnB, and all latest radio hits in the Western World. I also love Yanni, and ofcourse Beethovan, and many other classical pieces.

Do you know why the original CD was 74 minutes long? Because its enough to hold entire Beethovan's 9th in  just one CD.

Whitney Houston's "I will always love you" is one of my all time favorite songs. She passed away yesterday, and I've heard this song 5 times already after reading the news.

Yesterday, I was at a Prarthana Sabha in the bay area. One person delivered such a wonderful rendition of "Pankhida ne aa pinjaru" - I was in tears listening to it. Here is the video sung by legendary Mukesh. What beautiful lyrics!

The daughter and I listened to these two songs one evening this week.....the first one is a R.D.Burman classic (even though it maybe copied) and the second one is one amazing Naushad composition.

On the radio, I'm totally addicted to Adele - I can't wait to watch her perform at the Grammys tonite :)...I'm pretty certain she is going to sweep all the categories she is nominated in. Listen to this:

Last, but not the least, I love this techno remix of Beethovan's Fur Elise.....it always gets me moving ;)

Do you love these songs as well? Which are some of your favorites?

{this moment} The joys of co-sleeping

"A Friday ritual. A single photo - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember" - SouleMama

We co-sleep with our daughter. We have a crib and tried to make her sleep in it, but it didn't work - mostly for us :). I think the BEST time we spend with her during the day is before bedtime.....we do lots of giggling and masti - then hubby n I take turns gobbling her up while we gaze and admire our sleeping beauty :)!

She LOVES to scratch my tummie when she's trying to sleep - it's something I loved to do as a child too....well, I still love to do it. I will scratch my husband's arm sometimes if I am having a really hard time falling asleep.

Every night, she falls asleep in a unique position. Earlier this week, it was this....her head on my tummie, legs around my face, and my arms wrapped around her :)!

Even if your child sleeps in a crib, try co-sleeping once in a while - I promise you won't regret it!

{this moment} Story Time

"A Friday ritual. A single photo - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember" - SouleMama

We go through atleast 10 books every evening - her current favorites are Thomas books, Maisy flap books, Curious George's Pizza Party, books on shapes, and Douglas the bear's Hugless Douglas + Don't Worry Douglas. Her dad reads to her more than I do - he is very patient with her.....I'm usually fixing meals in the kitchen or resting while watching both of them read :)!

That my daughter should love books and reading was something I had hoped n wished n dreamed for long before I had her in my life. And to see it come to life - Priceless!
